Typical Nantwich area long door, oak case with mahogany crossbanding and details, very similar to the example ( plate XIV ) shown in "Clockmakers of Cheshire" by Keith Appleby though my example retains it's original shallow caddy top plus superstructure ( box ) behind the red silk backed frets under the swan neck pediment.The paterae are hand carved. Fluted "Flying" hood columns with matching trunk quarter columns.Shaped top to the long, mahogany crossbanded, trunk door. Mahogany crossbanding to raised base panel. Canted corners to base. Ogee bracket feet.

13" breakarch brass dial with MOONPHASES to arch, large cherubs head cast brass spandrels, engraved "compass star" centred subsidiary seconds dial.Thomas Birchall Nantwich engraved to upper, silvered dial centre. Date aperture to finely engraved and silvered lower dial centre. Blued, cut steel, hands. N.B. There is a very good, very similar dial by this maker illustrated in Keith Appleby's book "Clockmakers of Cheshire" ( plate XIV ).

Good quality, 8 day, 4 pillar movement with hourly ( rack ) striking.

Thomas Birchall of Nantwich is recorded - "born about 1725.Married 1755.Died 1822.Worked in Hospital Street 1782 - 84.Repaired Wrenbury church clock in 1774/5 - about the time he made this clock. N.B. There is a very good, very similar clock by this maker illustrated in "Clockmakers of Cheshire" by Keith Appleby ( plate XVI ) though my example retains it's original shallow caddy top plus superstructure ( "box" ) behind the swan neck pediment.
