Sharman of Melton - short for Melton Mowbray. SMALL, pretty, simple, long door, flat top, plain oak case with 8 day movement and 12" square painted dial. Circa 1815.

CASE DETAILS

SMALL, simple, flat top, long door, plain oak case with "pillars attached" hood door. Well proportioned, small and sweet.

DIAL DETAILS

12" square "Walker & Hughes" painted dial with main "wavy Arabic" numerals, "wavy Arabic" outers ( 60, 15, 30, 45 ) subsidiary seconds dial, "sad mouth" date aperture, fruit centred leafy swags to corner spandrels and blued, cut steel, lozenge, hands. N.B. Walker & Hughes ( dialmakers ) are recorded in Birmingham - 15, Lower Priory 1812 - 26, then Fisher Street 1827 - 35. This example, dating by style, is one of their earlier ones, circa 1815.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Good quality, 8 day, 4 pillar movement with hourly ( rack ) striking.

Sharman ( John ) of Melton is recorded - born 1776, working Melton Mowbray ( Leicestershire ) circa 1800, married 1806. Last known 1840, also an ironmonger.

DATE - Circa 1815.
