Very well proportioned long door oak case with caddy top, side windows to hood and "pillars attached" hood door.

12" square brass dial with unusual dial layout, the datebox being above the dial centre and the moonphase feature below it. Engraved Geo ( George ) Hewett Marlborough to the silvered dial centre. Cast brass "central head" rococo spandrels. Blued cut steel hands.

Very well executed, 4 knopped pillar, 8 day, movement having hourly ( rack ) striking.

Geo ( George ) Hewett was a very, very good provincial maker of fine clocks including astronomical, musical, and all types of complicated mechanisms including organs - being able to set music to play mechanically. He was also an accomplished goldsmith, watchmaker and jeweller. George Hewett is recorded - "born about 1733 and took over the business of William Gough the goldsmith and watchmaker in 1757." His wife Ann died in 1804. He died in 1807. He was an exceptionally talented man who mastered many disciplines.
