CASE DETAILS
Typical Hythe ( Kent ) area long door, oak case with caddy top, side windows to hood and "pillars attached" hood door. N.B. This is a particularly small, sweet, neat, compact case of very good proportions.
DIAL DETAILS
12" square brass dial with finely matted and engraved centre having "starburst" engraved centre to subsidiary seconds dial, ringed winding holes, square date box, "floating half hour markers and "late" form of cherub's head spandrels. Blued cut steel hands.
MOVEMENT DETAILS
High quality, ringed and knopped, 5 pillar, 8 day movement with hourly ( rack ) striking on a single bell.
MAKER DETAILS
John Mercer of Hythe. N.B. Two makers of this name recorded .Dating by style this is the earlier one recorded "pre 1736". Further recorded " A very good early lantern clock with floral and tulip engraving on the dial and with dolphin frets has been recorded. Regettably this clock has been fitted with a fusee movement at a later date, but the style of the dial leads one to suppose that he must have been working very early in the 18C. All of the longcase movements seen have been of good quality with 5 ringed pillars and housed in oak or walnut cases".
