Small, neat, slender, pretty, breakarch top, oak case with inlaid parquetry star to quarter sawn, long trunk door.Hood columns attached to hood door.Mahogany crossbanding and details.Plain strip plinth.
DIAL DETAILS
12" breakarch engraved and silvered brass dial with moonphases to arch, subsidiary seconds dial and "sad mouth" date aperture. N.B. The engraving is particularly fine and delicate.
MOVEMENT DETAILS
Good quality 8 day, movement with hourly ( rack ) striking.
MAKER DETAILS
William Whitby of Cullompton is recorded listed in the Universal British Directory1793. He was apprenticed to Henry Rendell of Tiverton on 25th July 1776 for 7 years at a premium of £13-13-0 ( 13 guineas ).Tiverton being the closest town to Cullompton and within easy reach. Rendell himself was lucky enough to marry well......."Miss Susannah Owens having a fortune of £1,000 besides a house furnished very handsomely, but what renders her price more, she is an agreeable lady and indued with every accomplishment requisite."
