Good, small, neat, long door, plain oak case with unusual eagle ball centred "lyre" swan neck terminations.Shaped top to trunk door.All set on shallow bracket feet.

12" breakarch early "Osborne" painted dial with moonphases to arch, raised gilt gesso corner spandrels, "minutes numbered" in Arabics surrounding the main Roman chapters, delicately flower painted dial centre, subsidiary seconds dial and "sad mouth" date aperture.Blued cut steel hands.

Good quality, 8 day, 4 knopped pillar movement with hourly ( rack ) striking to a single bell.

Jof. ( Joseph ) Coombe of Melksham, recorded born 1761 and ( probably - unlikely another of same name ) apprenticed to Henry Link of Bristol in October 1773( the dates tie up ). Known to have been trading in Melksham by 1783.In 1798 Melksham church paid him £5-11-00 for work on the church clock.

His wife, Elizabeth, was buried 29th May 1803 aged 68.On 1st January 1805, Joseph the illegitimate son of Ruth Jeaks was baptised.Later on that same day Ruth Jeaks and Joseph Coombe were married - obviously a day to tie up loose ends.

Lacock churchwardens accounts show 10 entries 1822 - 1835 for maintenance work to the church clock carried out by Joseph Coombe. Joseph's second wife, Ruth, was buried 11th June 1838 aged 57, whilst Joseph lived on until 14th January 1842 and aged 81.
