A very well executed late 18C, long door, quarter sawn, oak longcase clock with swan neck pediment, brass dial, moonphases and 8 day movement by Joseph Stancliffe of Barkisland.

CASE DETAILS

High quality, quarter sawn oak case with eagle ball capped swan neck pediment, 'floating'? hood columns, quarter columns to trunk, the trunk door with shaped top, the base with raised panel. The whole set on fretted apron base.

DIAL DETAILS

13" breakarch brass dial with moonphases to arch, finely engraved and silvered dial centre featuring ho ho birds, starburst to centre of subsidiary seconds dial and sailing ship to centre of subsidiary date dial.Signed 'Joseph Stancliffe Barkisland' to a 'rainbow'? over top of arch.Blued cut steel hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Well executed, high quality, 4 pillar, 8 day, movement with nicely turned details.Hourly ( rack ) striking on a single bell, pull hour repeat, strike/silent. This example has the so called "table top" unusual seatboard arrangement so typical of the Stancliffes and others in the Halifax school of clockmaking catchment area at the time.

MAKER DETAILS

Joseph Stancliffe of Barkisland is recorded born the son of John ( also a clockmaker ) 1740.

Baptised in Ripponden and believed apprenticed to William Finch, watchmaker 1753. Worked with his father who died in 1780 prior to which output was allegedly signed Stancliffe Barkisland after 1780 the full signature Joseph Stancliffe Barkisland appears to have been used.Most of his output were simple brass dial 30 hour clocks so this 8 day, moonphase example was very much the 'deluxe' version of his work.
