A very good, very early, 18C walnut and arabesque marquetry longcase clock by Brounker Watts of London, a famous Knibb apprentice..

CASE DETAILS

Typical very early 18C walnut and arabesque marquetry long door case of superb proportions and exquisite quality. The flat topped hood with pierced fret, side windows and Doric columns.

DIAL DETAILS

12" square brass dial with wheatear edge engraving, large crown and cherub spandrels, engraved starburst to seconds aperture, very finely matted, bird engraved, central zone with cross hatching to bevelled edge of datebox and "Brounker Watts London" engraved to matchbox sized panel below dial centre.The winding holes with flower head edge decoration, the chapter ring with half quarters marked. Blued cut steel hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

High quality knopped and finned 5 pillar, 8 day movement with hourly ( inside countwheel ) striking.

MAKER DETAILS

Brounker Watts ( born circa 1670 ) is one of the best known apprentices of the famous and revered Joseph Knibb to whom he was bound from Jan 1684/85 until 1691.He was freed in 1693/4 and believed dead circa 1720. He worked in Fleet Street, London and is known for his excellent workmanship.
