JA very fine, typically "Edinburgh," marquetry inlaid mahogany longcase clock with silvered and engraved brass dial having MOONPHASES and High Water at Leith indicator to arch by John Robertson of Potterrow Port, Edinburgh circa 1785.

CASE DETAILS

The exceptional, typically "Edinburgh," late 18C, long door, marquetry inlaid, mahogany case with brass finial centred swan neck pediment featuring hand carved, gilded, "rose" paterae and typical, silk backed, pierced fretwork under. Domed side windows to hood.

Full "floating" reeded hood columns with matching trunk quarter columns flanking the long, marquetry inlaid, rosewood crossbanded and boxwood strung trunk door, the crossbanding, boxwood stringing and marquetry themes being repeated in the base. Shallow bracket feet.

N.B. There is an old repairer's label on the seatboard which reads....... A. Klausman ( successor to D. Ferenbach ) German Clock Maker 23, Lothian Street EDINBURGH Clocks and ?.....? carefully cleaned and repaired The missing section ( probably ) should read "watches."

DIAL DETAILS

13" breakarch finely engraved and silvered brass dial with "starry sky" moonphases to arch, calibrations for High Water at Leith, subsidiary seconds dial and round date aperture. Strike/Silent indicator at the 9 o'clock position. John Robertson Potterrow Port Edinburgh beautifully engraved to lower dial centre. Blued, cut steel hands, the minute serpentine.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Well executed, 8 day, 4 pillar movement with hourly ( rack ) striking, pull hour repeat, gear and pin moonwork and strike/silent facility.

MAKER DETAILS

There is recorded just one John Robertson of Edinburgh ( at Netherbow ) 1783 - 1821 though not at Potterow Port. Dating by style this clock was made circa 1785 and I surmise, in the absence of any contrary information, that this was probably the same man.

DATE - Circa 1785.

HEIGHT - 90" ( 228.5 cms. ) or 87.8" ( 223 cms. ) ex. Finial.
