CASE DETAILS
Well proportioned, long door, flame mahogany case of good colour with keystone centred breakarch top and blind fretting under. Small, neat, breakarch top side windows to hood. Pillars attached hood door with rear hood quarter columns. Typical of region and period.
Shaped top to long trunk door flanked by canted, fluted trunk corners The raised base panel with shaped top. All set on plain strip plinth. Good, rich, colour and "toffee apple" patination. Very pretty and obviously well looked after during it's lifetime..
DIAL DETAILS
12" breakarch silvered and finely engraved brass dial with "starry sky" moonphases to arch and engraved to show the moon's age and High Water at Topsham Barr ( nowadays Topsham Bar ). Finely engraved moonphase humps, finely engraved detail to the 4 seasons spandrels and subsidiary seconds dial.
The finely engraved dial centre depicting a cottage, coastal fort, and two sailing ships at anchor. Large date lunette to lower dial centre. Signed James Reynolds in script and ROCKBEAR in block lettering. To lower dial centre. Blued cut steel hands.
MOVEMENT DETAILS
Well executed, 8 day, 4 pillar, hourly ( rack ) striking movement with geared moonphase drive and pull hour repeat.
MAKER DETAILS
James Reynold is recorded ( somewhat sketchily ) "possibly 1820 or earlier."
DATE - Dating by style circa 1800.
