Case | Small, neat, slender, pretty, breakarch top, oak case with inlaid parquetry star to quarter sawn, long trunk door.Hood columns attached to hood door.Mahogany crossbanding and details.Plain strip plinth. | |
Dial | 12" breakarch engraved and silvered brass dial with moonphases to arch, subsidiary seconds dial and "sad mouth" date aperture. N.B. The engraving is particularly fine and delicate. | |
Movement | Good quality 8 day, movement with hourly ( rack ) striking. | |
Maker | William Whitby of Cullompton is recorded listed in the Universal British Directory1793. He was apprenticed to Henry Rendell of Tiverton on 25th July 1776 for 7 years at a premium of £13-13-0 ( 13 guineas ).Tiverton being the closest town to Cullompton and within easy reach. Rendell himself was lucky enough to marry well......."Miss Susannah Owens having a fortune of £1,000 besides a house furnished very handsomely, but what renders her price more, she is an agreeable lady and indued with every accomplishment requisite." | |
