John Calver of Woodbridge - the Suffolk one. A very good, breakarch top, burr and figured walnut, 8 day, longcase clock with MOONPHASES to arch of brass dial and with High Water indicator ( at Woodbridge Haven ) to "banana slot" within the subsidiary seconds dial. Circa 1740.

CASE DETAILS

A very good, long door, burr and figured walnut case with breakarch top, side windows to hood, "pillars attached" hood door, breakarch top to trunk door and book match panelled two step base, the lower, shaped.

DIAL DETAILS

12" breakarch brass dial with "starry sky" MOONPHASES to arch, scroll engraving to arch and moon humps, silvered chapter ring with "floating" half hour markers plus subsidiary seconds dial having "banana slot" within, indicating High Water at Woodbridge Haven - a most unusual format, personally never seen before.

Finely matted dial centre. Conventional date box above 6 o'clock position and engraved signature, Jno. Calver Woodbridge to applied plaque, lower dial centre. Feathery head spandrels, blued, cut steel hands, brass bound weights and "double brass" pendulum bob.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

High quality, 8 day, 5 pillar movement with tee shaped frontplate to accommodate the geared drive moonwork. Hourly ( rack ) striking.

MAKER DETAILS

John Calver worked in Stone Street, Woodbridge ( the Suffolk one ). He is recorded "Born circa 1695, married 1738, died 1751."

DATE - Circa 1740.
