A very good, early 18C, long door, flat top, figured walnut, 8 day, longcase clock with 12" breakarch brass dial by William Gill of Maidstone circa 1725 - one of Maidstone's most celebrated and competent clockmakers.

CASE DETAILS

Figured and burr walnut, long door, flat top case with red "silk" backed frets under cornice top and to hood sides. Polished brass capitals to "pillars attached" hood door and to matching hood rear quarter columns. Boxwood and ebony stringing to hood door, below hood throat moulding, trunk door, trunk sides, and to base panel. Plain strip base.

DIAL DETAILS

12" breakarch, finely matted brass dial with Wm. ( William ) Gill of Maidstone inscribed on wheatear edge engraved convex name boss to arch with matching wheatear edge engraving to top of arch. "Feathery head" cast brass spandrels, "starburst" engraved centre to flying bird flanked subsidiary seconds dial which also flank basket of fruit engraved over top of square date box. The silvered Roman chapter ring with "floating" half hour markers and inner "tramlines" - typical of the region and period.Blued, cut steel hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

High quality, 8 day, movement with 5 knopped and ringed pillars, hourly ( rack ) striking and pull hour repeat.

MAKER DETAILS

Wm. ( William ) Gill of Maidstone ( Kent ).Recorded "One of Maidstone's most celebrated and competent makers, entering his apprenticeship with Walter Harris in 1704."He obtained his Freedom in 1710 and supplied the church clock to Rainham church in 1713.Last date 1770.

DATE - Circa 1725.

N.B. There is a very similar dial by Gill illustrated on p.144 of "Kent Clocks and Clockmakers" by Michael Pearson captioned " about 1715 - 20," though the dial on LCWAL 118 is a bit nicer, having birds in flight engraved to the lower dial centre.
