Robert Robertson at the Still in Lothbury Londini fecit.

MAKER DETAILS

Robert Robinson is recorded – born circa 1631, apprenticed August 1645 to John Pennock thro’ O.Durrant.Freed 1652.Clockmakers Company 1652 – 1669. Early examples signed In Red Cross Street London and later ( as in this example ) at the Style - or Still as it was sometimes spelt at the time.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

The movement with original single hand, original wheelwork, original verge escapement, bell, bellstand and featuring the original galleried top* “sandwiched” between between the top of the dial and the bell.

• The so called “galleried top” is a feature found on many very early lantern clocks with balance wheel escapements – presumably so that the oscillating balance wheel could be seen working through the gallery.

• When the pendulum eclipsed the balance wheel as the primary form of escapement the “gallery” continued, stylistically, for a while before fading away.

This is a 3 function clock - Going, Hourly strike and Alarm. The alarm being set by rotating the alarm disc in the centre of the dial to align with the tail of the hour hand to determine activation. Dating by style the clock is circa 1666 – 67 ( just after the Great Fire of London ). There is a similar example by this maker in Museum of the Home, Kingsland Road, London, E2 8EA.
