Antique Longcase Marquetry Clock - LCMAR 103

A superb William III, walnut/"all over" bird and flower marquetry longcase clock by Char. ( Charles ) Halfted of London. N.B. also recorded spelt Halsted and Halstead - before spelling was standardised.

Typical, slender, exquisitely proportioned, walnut/bird & flower marquetry case with side windows and blind fret frieze to flat topped hood, Doric hood columns, concave throat moulding, long trunk door having round polished brass lenticle.The base set on plain strip plinth.


11" square brass dial with finely cast and finished "cherubs head" spandrels, finely matted dial centre having ringing to winding holes and to subsidiary seconds dial centre. Decorative engraving to square date box. Signed on chapter ring Char. Halfted London. Blued cut steel hands.


High quality 8 day movement with 5 knopped and finned pillars.Inside ( hourly ) countwheel striking.Matched pair of period brass bound weights and typical double brass pendulum bob.


Char. ( Charles ) Halfted also recorded spelt Halsted and Halstead. Recorded born circa 1656 and apprenticed to Richard Halstead July 1670 - September 1677. The "later to become famous" Daniel Delander was apprenticed to him in April 1692 and later turned over to Thomas Tompion being freed in July 1699. Recorded member of the Clockmakers Company 1677 - 1710. Silver repeating watch circa 1710 by him in the Ilbert Collection.
