Small, pretty, well proportioned, long door mahogany case with breakarch top and side windows to hood. Carved details to hood, trunk and base. Unusual fluted hood pillars with brass quarter capitals and feet. Canted, fluted corners to trunk, parquetry star to trunk door and parquetry details to base.
DIAL DETAILS
12” breakarch finely matted brass dial centre with rococo spandrels, subsidiary seconds dial below the 12 o’clock position and blued, cut steel hands, 3 winding holes for - going, hourly strike and quarter chiming on 6 bells.
MOVEMENT DETAILS
Very substantial, high quality, 5 pillar movement with anchor escapement, hourly and quarter chiming features. The high quality of the movement leads me to believe that it could have been “bought in” from London and the dial applied by Blondell.
MAKER DETAILS
Nicholas Blondell of Guernesey is recorded circa 1719 died 1776.This example, dating by style circa 1770. It is recorded that “He could not turn out clocks quickly enough and had to order some from England.” The movement in question may well be a “bought in” one being of high quality and quite sophisticated.
