George Clapham of Brigg ( North Lincolnshire ).An excellent, late 18C, long door, highly figured, flame mahogany, 8 day, longcase clock with pagoda top and MOONPHASES to arch of brass dial.

CASE DETAILS

Slender, exquisitely proportioned, highly figured, long door, flame mahogany "Humber Bank" case with central red "silk" backed fret to eagle finial flanked pagoda top. Corinthian capped "flying" fluted hood columns, canted, fluted trunk corners, breakarch top to long trunk door, panelled and crossbanded base, all set on shallow bracket feet.

DIAL DETAILS

12" breakarch brass dial with "starry sky" MOONPHASES to arch. Signed - George Clapham Brigg to silvered "rainbow" over top of decoratively engraved arch. Matted and engraved dial centre with recessed silvered seconds disc and "sad mouth" date aperture.Rococo spandrels. Blued cut steel hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Unusual front plate to movement being cast with tee shapes to both top and bottom to accommodate the under dial moonwork and to "hide" the dial feet under the chapter ring. Good quality, 8 day, 4 pillar movement with hourly ( rack ) striking.

MAKER DETAILS

George Clapham of Brigg recorded 1760 - circa 1790. "Several brass and painted dialled longcase clocks, including lunar arch, and three train extant."

DATE - Circa 1770.

HEIGHT - 90" ( 228.5 cms. ).
