LCMAH 370 - £5,250

Typical "Edinburgh" area slender, well proportioned, long door mahogany case with spire/ball centred swan neck pediment having satinwood panels under, fluted hood columns with matching trunk quarter columns and simple strip plinth to base. Very delicate, very pretty.

12" breakarch early, delicately painted, "Osborne" dial, signed Robt. Welsh Dalkeith to flower sprig flanked circular reserve in arch.Strawberry and flower painted corner spandrels, subsidiary seconds dial, small square datebox with silvered date ring similar to and developed from the earlier brass dial format ( see LCMAH 311 by the same maker, though that example somewhat earlier ).

Large Roman chapters with smaller ( 5 minutes numbered ) Arabic outers. Blued, cut steel, hands. N.B. Thomas Hadley Osborne, the dialmaker, is recorded "born 1753, Sutton Coldfield worked at 20, Cherry Orchard, Birmingham, died 1779 aged 26" so we may confidently date this clock to circa 1778. In his earlier career he was in partnership with James Wilson1772 - 1777 in Colmore Row, Birmingham.

Good quality, 8 day, movement with hourly ( rack ) striking.

Robt. ( Robert ) Welsh of Dalkeith recorded "married 30th January 1763, was working until 1812 and believed dead before 1819." Known for 8 day, brass dial, and painted dial longcases, the latter sometimes with Dallaway dials, all, invariably, in good mahogany cases.

It's generally accepted that Osborne dials are superior to the Dallaway ones. Please see LCMAH 311 by same maker, though that example somewhat earlier and with a brass dial.

DATE - Circa 1778.

HEIGHT - 83" ( 211 cms. ).
