Antique Longcase Mahogany Clock -

A classic, pagoda top, high quality, late 18C, "London," flame mahogany, 8 day, longcase clock with brass dial and MOONPHASES by Thomas Udall of London circa 1795.

Fine quality flame mahogany veneers to triple spire/ball mounted, pagoda top case with central red silk backed fret. Side windows to hood. Brass insert Corinthian capped, fluted "flying" hood columns with matching Corinthian capped, brass insert, fluted trunk quarter columns flanking the long trunk door. Typical scalloped corners to the raised base panel. "London" two step base, the lower, shaped.


14" breakarch brass dial with "starry sky" moonphases to arch, subsidiary recessed seconds disc, finely matted dial centre, cast brass rococo spandrels, conventional date aperture above the 6 o'clock position and blued, cut steel hands. Boldly signed Thomas Udall London to "rainbow" at top of arch.


The very high quality, hourly ( rack ) striking, 8 day, movement with 5 knopped pillars and tee shaped frontplate to accommodate the gear driven moonwork. Silky smooth winding. Flat brass pendulum strip with "double brass" bob, the rating nut calibrated. Brass bound weights.


Thomas Udall, London is recorded at Shoe Lane, London. Clockmakers Company 1789 - 1814. N.B. Shoe Lane is an area of London where the upper echelons of the Clock Trade flourished, notably John Shelton the clockmaker who supplied many accurate clocks to the Government of the time including the regulator taken by Captain James Cook for the accurate measurement of the Transit of Venus in Tahiti, leaving England ( Portsmouth) on August 12th 1768.
