A very good, very typically "Bristol," superior quality, string inlaid, mahogany, longcase clock with swan neck pediment by John Warry of Bristol circa 1815. The 12" painted dial with MOONPHASES to arch.

CASE DETAILS

Well proportioned, very typically "Bristol," superior quality, flame mahogany case with eagle/ compressed ball finial centred swan neck pediment, typical "wavy" inner edge to hood door and shaped backsplats to rear of hood.Inlaid stringing to hood, trunk and base.

Corinthian capped "floating" rope twist hood columns with matching Corinthian capped full trunk columns Well chosen flame veneers to trunk door and to base panel. All set on "front only" bracket feet.A "leaner" - typical of the region and period. Would have been a very expensive case to produce.

DIAL DETAILS

12" breakarch painted dial with moonphases to arch, subsidiary seconds dial and "sad mouth" date aperture.Two well executed, boldly painted, seascapes to moon disc ( which usually features a seascape and a landscape ) reflecting Bristol's strong links with the sea.

"Overflowing fruit basket" painted spandrels and Arabic numerals. Signed John Warry Bristol to lower dial centre. Unusual punch decorated, polished and lacquered brass hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Well executed, 8 day, 4 pillar, hourly ( rack ) striking movement with "nags head" moonphase drive.

MAKER DETAILS

John Warry of Bristol. Two such, father and son.John (1) recorded 1783 - 1821 and John (2) recorded 1830 - 58.Dating by style this clock is circa 1815 so may be confidently be attributed to John (1) who we know worked in Redcliffe street, Bristol.

Good quality, prolific output of longcases with 30 hour and 8 day examples recorded , the latter featuring automata ( rocking ship and "lion's eyes" variants ) moonwork as well as "still arch." Also known for fusee wall clocks ( I have one in my personal collection ) and pocket watches. A very good, very successful maker who covered a wide range of horological disciplines.

DATE - Dating by style circa 1815.

HEIGHT - 88.2" ( 224 cms. ) or 86.6" ( 220 cms. ) ex. Finial.
