A very good, very typically 'Lancashire' long door richly patinated, flame mahogony longcase clock with swan neck pediment, circa 1770. The engraved and silvered brass dial with MOONPHASES and centre sweep date. Signed James Barton Prescot to 'rainbow' at top of arch.

CASE DETAILS

Well proportioned, typically "Lancashire" long door, richly patinated, flame mahogany case of good colour having typical "flying saucer" finials, over swan neck pediment with dark blue/gilt verre eglomise panels under. Floating fluted hood columns with matching rear hood half columns.

Shaped top to long, mahogany crossbanded, flame mahogany, trunk door flanked by fluted quarter colums The raised, book match veneered, base panel with re entrant ( babys' bums ) corners. Brickwork quoins to front corners and ( unusually ) to rear of base. All set on shallow ogee bracket feet.

DIAL DETAILS

13" breakarch silvered and engraved brass dial with "starry sky" moonphases to arch and engraved to show the moon's age. Signed James Barton Prescot in red wax to "rainbow" at top of arch. Finely engraved moonphase "humps", large cherubs head spandrels, sweep date hand and subsidiary seconds dial. The dial centre finely matted and engraved. Blued cut steel hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Well executed, 8 day, 4 pillar, hourly ( rack ) striking movement with geared ( twin paddle ) moonphase drive.

MAKER DETAILS

James Barton is ( as yet ) an unrecorded maker but may be the clockmaker recorded apprenticed to his Grandfather ( also James ) of Ormskirk, a town 16 miles South of Prescot in 1718.

DATE - Dating by style circa 1765.

HEIGHT - 93.8" ( 238.5 cms. ).
