A very good and ( unusually small for Bristol ) long door, solid mahogany, 8 day, longcase clock with brass dial, MOONPHASES, pull hour repeat and Strike/Silent facility by Joseph Smith of Bristol circa 1770.

CASE DETAILS

Unusually small ( for Bristol ) high quality, long door, solid mahogany case with typical keystone centred breakarch top. Breakarch side windows and brass capped fluted "flying" columns to hood.Typical "Bristol" shaped top to long trunk door flanked by canted fluted corners - repeated in the base. The base with typical Bristol raised shaped panel.Plain strip bottom.

DIAL DETAILS

12" breakarch brass dial with "starry sky" moonphases to arch and Joseph Smith Bristol engraved to "rainbow" above.Finely matted dial centre, "feathery head" spandrels, subsidiary seconds dial, square date box and blued, cut steel hands. N & S ( Not Strike and Strike ) feature by 3 o'clock position.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

High quality 5 pillar movement with hourly ( rack ) striking.Unusually, there is a half hour passing strike as well.Pull hour repeat, Strike/Not Strike facility, well executed geared moondrive.

MAKER DETAILS

Joseph Smith of Bristol. Recorded working 1725 - 1778 competent in the "heavy" side i.e. turret clocks, also the "light" side of the trade i.e. pocket watches and seemingly every discipline in between, being known for a variety of longcases with moonwork and automata, plus bracket clocks too.A very competent "all rounder." He was at 63, Broad Street 1760 - 1775, about the time he made this clock ( circa 1770 ).
