CASE DETAILS
Exceptional case of the finest quality and absolutely typical of the region and period, similar high quality examples by the same maker being extant. The very fine pagoda top case with red "silk" backed central oval fret flanked by twin polished brass spire ball finials set on satinwood bordered marquetry applied support details.
Boxwood strung hood door flanked by "floating" Corinthian capped fluted columns repeated as quarter columns to the trunk.The breakarch top trunk door featuring a finely cut marquetry detail to the arch above an exceptional flame veneered door.Boxwood strung and crossbanded raised base panel. All set on typical swept bracket feet. An excellent well looked after case with good colour and patination.
DIAL DETAILS
13" breakarch painted dial featuring moonphases to arch, well executed raised gilt gesso bordered 4 seasons spandrels, "minutes numbered" in Arabics to outers of Roman chapters and twin subsidiary dials for seconds and date. Signed Bancroft Scarborough in an inverted "rainbow" to dial centre.
MOVEMENT DETAILS
Very good quality 8 day movement with 4 knopped pillars and hourly ( rack ) striking on a single bell. Particularly well executed moondrive mechanism.
MAKER DETAILS
Bancroft of Scarborough. N.B. There is a JOHN Bancroft of Scarborough recorded 1770 - 1807, reputedly from London which could explain the very good quality,well executed movement. There is a painted dial longcase recorded signed J.Bancroft Scarborough, reckoned circa 1780.
