An excellent, late 18C, flame mahogany, long door, 8 day longcase clock with brass dial, MOONPHASES and spectacular pierced and fretted anthemion centred crest by Joseph Denton of Hull.

CASE DETAILS

Excellent, long door, flame mahogany, case with spectacular pierced and fretted anthemion centred crest, shaped side windows to hood, cast brass Corinthian capped stop fluted hood columns with matching hood rear quarter columns. Fluted, canted corners to trunk repeated in the base.

Ebonised moulded details throughout. Ivory (?) key escutcheons. All set on shallow bracket feet. Inside the door a label reads: '8 days clock by Joseph Denton, Hull. With brass and silvered dial, indicated the phases of the moon and time of highwater; The case is mahogany summounted by a finely pierced pediment and is excellent specimen of the Chippendale period' Signed Thos. Boynton. Cabinetwork of the highest quality.

DIAL DETAILS

13" breakarch brass dial with moonphases to arch, also showing high water at the home port, Hull, with a movable pointer to allow setting for high water at the port of destination.Cast brass "urn" spandrels, engraved and silvered dial centre with subsidiary dials for seconds and date. Engraved, Joseph Denton Hull to "rainbow" at top of arch. Blued cut steel hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Beautifully executed, good quality, 8 day, 4 pillar movement with hourly ( rack ) striking. N.B. The ( not easily impressed ) movement restorer commented upon the exquisite workmanship and attention to detail built into this movement and dial.

MAKER DETAILS

Joseph Denton of Hull. Recorded working in Scale Lane where he succeeded R. Egglestone in 1779.Married at Preston in Holderness June 1781 to Elizabeth Cayley of Preston.She died in 1814. His shop was at the corner of Silver Street by 1782 and by 1802 he seems to have formed a partnership with Fox the output then being signed Denton & Fox.
