An exceptional, typically "Bristol" late 18C, long door, Cuban flame mahogany, longcase clock of good rich colour and patination having deadbeat escapement, maintaining power, wood rod pendulum, moonphases and showing High Water at Bristol Key by Philip Lloyd of Bristol. CASE DETAILS

Exceptional late 18C, typically "Bristol" Cuban flame mahogany, long door case of excellent rich colour and patination. The spire/ball centred swan neck pediment with hand carved flower head paterae and foliate detail carved fret frieze above keystone centred arch. Cast brass Corinthian capped fluted hood columns, shaped backsplats to hood, canted corners to trunk with matching base corner details, high quality "double moulded" detail to long trunk door and decorated applied base panel all set on a simple strip plinth.

DIAL DETAILS

12" breakarch brass dial with finely matted and engraved dial centre, 'starry sky' background to moonphases in arch and indicating High Water at Bristol Key. Engraved moon humps, rococo spandrels, subsidiary seconds dial, square date box, and blued cut steel hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Exceptionally high quality 8 day movement with 4 knopped pillars, geared moondrive, deadbeat escapement with maintaining power, regulator style fine beat adjustment to top of crutch, substantial cast brass bracket bridging front and back movement plates, incorporating two position pendulum suspension and bellstand. Substantial, regulator style, wood rod pendulum. Hourly ( rack ) striking. Blued cut steel hands.

MAKER DETAILS

Philip Lloyd was originally from Llawhaden in Pembrokeshire and arrived in Bristol in 1775 - about the time he made this clock. He is recorded "most of his clocks are in first quality mahogany cases with moon and tidal dials.He also made astronomical and other complicated clocks". A very highly rated, well documented maker of exceptional talent recorded Bristol 1775 - 85.
