CASE DETAILS
Good, long door flame mahogany case with 3 eagle/ball finials mounted to swan neck pediment having black/gilt verre eglomise panels under, brass capped fluted hood columns with matching fluted trunk quarter columns, dentilled throat moulding, shaped top to trunk door and canted corners to raised panel base. All set on ogee bracket feet.
DIAL DETAILS
13" breakarch "Wilson" dial with moonphases to arch, raised gilt gesso borders to strawberry and flower painted corner spandrels, subsidiary seconds dial and "sad mouth" date aperture.The dial centre painted with flowers and signed Archd. ( Archibald ) Coates Wigan.Blued cut steel hands.
MOVEMENT DETAILS
Good quality 8 day, 4 pillar movement with hourly rack striking and pull hour repeat. Geared moondrive.
MAKER DETAILS
Archibald Coates of Wigan is recorded - " Archibald Coates, was a prolific clockmaker working in Wigan, Lancashire, from 1759 or a little earlier, until his death there in 1797." Also recorded " Clock and watchmaker of repute" - "two watches and clock by him in Wigan museum."
