A small, neat, pretty, late 18C, 8 day, unusually figured, long door, mahogany longcase clock with breakarch top, silvered breakarch dial and rocking ship AUTOMATON by Richard Lear Pinhay of Plymouth Dock. N.B. Sometimes also seen spelt Pinhey. Now sold.

CASE DETAILS

Typical "Plymouth" late 18C long door, breakarch mahogany case but with unusual figuring.Plymouth cases of this period are invariably small, neat and pretty - please see LCMAH 202 and LCMAH 210 in Mahogany section of archive pre September 2003.

DIAL DETAILS

12" breakarch finely engraved and silvered brass dial with rocking ship automaton to arch, engraved subsidiary seconds dial, "sad mouth" date aperture and finely engraved "four seasons" spandrels.Blued cut steel hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Good quality 4 pillar, 8 day, movement with hourly ( rack ) striking.Rocking ship automaton driven from pallet arbor.

MAKER DETAILS

Richard Lear Pinhay ( also seen spelt Pinhey ) of Plymouth Dock.Known working pre 1770 and still alive in 1815.

DATE - Late 18C say, circa 1795.
