A superb mid 18C, long door, Cuban mahogany, brass dial, 8 day, longcase clock with MOONPHASES by Nathaniel Brown of Manchester.

CASE DETAILS

Typical mid 18C, high quality, "Manchester", Cuban mahogany, long door case with swan neck pediment, cast brass "rose" paterae, eagle/ball central finial flanked by two spire/ball finials, fluted hood columns with brass Corinthian capitals, matching fluted trunk quarter columns, boxwood and ebony chevron stringing to trunk door, panelled base with canted corners all set on ogee bracket feet.

DIAL DETAILS

13" breakarch brass dial with moonphases to arch, matted and engraved dial centre, large cherubs head cast brass corner spandrels and bevel edged date box. "Nathaniel Brown Manchester" engraved in "rainbow" over moonphase feature in arch.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Well executed 8 day, 4 pillar movement with hourly ( rack ) striking on a single bell.

MAKER DETAILS

Nathaniel Brown of Manchester is recorded taking apprentices in 1759.Died August 1800. The excellent book "Greater Manchester Clocks and Clockmakers" by Edmund Davies features a similar clock on it's frontispiece which is further illustrated on p.125.This clock previously sold by me, photo's credited to me.

Another example, the dial of which is shown on p.124, is strikingly similar to the dial on this clock. A very well respected, well documented maker of high quality clocks.
