A slender, well proportioned, long door, red lacquer/gilt, brass dial, 8 day, longcase clock with caddy top by Edw. ( Edward ) Speakman of London circa 1700.

CASE DETAILS

Slender, well proportioned red/gilt lacquer case with caddy top and side windows to hood. Typical decoration of figures set in pavilions and gardens. Typical "London" two step base.The 11" dial lacquer examples always seem to get the proportions exactly right.

DIAL DETAILS

11" square brass dial with wheatear edge engraving, matted and engraved dial centre, ringed winding and seconds apertures, crown and cherub cast brass spandrels. Blued cut steel hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Good quality, 8 day movement with 4 knopped and finned pillars with hourly ( inside countwheel ) striking. Brass bound weights.

MAKER DETAILS

Edw. ( Edward ) Speakman son of William Speakman also a clockmaker. Born circa 1668 apprenticed to father January 1682/3 until 1689, freed January 1691/2. Known to be taking apprentices from January 1692/3. Recorded until 1712.

DATE - Circa 1700

HEIGHT - 87.2" ( 221.5 cms. ).
