A superbly proportioned very early 18th C classic "London" faux tortoiseshell and gilt chinoiserie lacquer longcase clock with caddy top by Thomas Cartwright of London ( with Royal connections ) circa 1705.

CASE DETAILS

Very early 18thC red and black faux tortoiseshell case with gilt lacquer details, lenticle to trunk door.The caddy top surmounted by three dark gold, gesso covered, wooden finials. Excellent London clock of classic "Stately Home" proportions.

DIAL DETAILS

12" square brass dial with finely matted dial centre, ringed winding holes, subsidiary seconds dial, early "fixed" ( rather than "floating" ) half hour markers to chapter ring, half quarters, decorative engraving between crown and cherub spandrels and square box date aperture above the six o' clock position.Exquisite blued cut steel hands.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Good quality 8 day movement with 5 finned, ringed and knopped pillars.Hourly ( inside countwheel ) striking.

MAKER DETAILS

Thomas Cartwright is recorded born 1679 apprenticed to the famous Christopher Gould in 1693, started taking his own apprentices in 1705 and reputedly died in 1741.Work known - watches, and longcase clocks including month duration, signed variously "Thomas Cartwright Londini", "Tho Cartwright Royal Exchange Londini fecit" and "Thomas Cartwright Watchmaker to the Prince".This example signed "Tho Cartwright London". A very good early maker who was CLOCKMAKER TO QUEEN ANNE AND GEORGE 1ST.

DATE - Very early 18thC. Dating by style circa 1705.

HEIGHT - 101" ( 256.5 cms. ) or 95.3" ( 242 cms. ) ex. finials.
